SRU business student charged with selling pot

Dalton Welsh

SLIPPERY ROCK — A business major at Slippery Rock University is facing felony charges after county narcotics officers seized more than $9,000 in currency from his apartment.

Officers say they also found about 1½ pounds of suspected marijuana during a warrant search Friday at the home on Grove City Road.

The defendant, 24-year-old Dalton P. Welsh, was later arraigned and he is to appear next week at a preliminary hearing.

The Butler County Drug Task Force said they utilized a police informant to arrange for a pair of controlled marijuana buys with Welsh on May 10 and Thursday in Slippery Rock.

In each alleged buy, according to court documents, the defendant sold about two ounces of marijuana to the informant for $350.

Officers on Friday obtained a search warrant for Welsh's apartment as part of the investigation. They found him sleeping in a bedroom.

A search, documents said, turned up a cooler containing about 24 ounces of marijuana, and THC wax in the refrigerator.

Additionally, officers found $9,220 in currency, two digital scales and an unlabeled prescription bottle containing the drug Vyvanse, which is an amphetamine commonly used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

District Judge Bill O'Donnell arraigned Welsh on two felony counts each of delivery of a controlled substance and criminal use of a communication facility, and three felony counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

He also was arraigned on misdemeanor charges including three counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Welsh is free on $10,000 bail while awaiting his initial hearing on the charges set for June 20 at O'Donnell's office in Slippery Rock.

Online court records did not indicate if he has an attorney and Welsh could not be reached for comment.

Welsh was enrolled at SRU during the recently completed spring semester, said Robb King, associate executive director for communication and public affairs at the university.

The defendant, who was planning to graduate in December, is majoring in business management.

King declined further comment about Welsh, citing the ongoing case.
