Shooting case headed for trial

Gary Ellenberger, 56, of Chicora plans to take his case to trial after allegedly shooting another man at a Chicora bar last month.

Ellenberger appeared Tuesday for his formal arraignment in the Butler County Court of Common Pleas and spoke with his appointed lawyer, Charles Nedz. Nedz confirmed that Ellenberger will not be pleading guilty and they plan on taking the case to trial.

Ellenberger is accused of shooting Heath Schrecengost, 27, of Karns City on Sept. 2 in the torso with a sawed-off shotgun at Millerstown Inn. He is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and illegal offensive weapons.

Due to the severity of the charges Judge Timothy McCune had previously denied a request for bail to be set, which would provide Ellenberger an opportunity to be released from Butler County Prison, where he has been held since his arrest on the same day of the shooting.

Schrecengost survived the shooting and has reportedly been released from hospital care, according to his aunt, Nichole Heller. Heller noted that Schrecengost still has a long way to go in making a full recovery and will be undergoing intense therapy.
