Cheerleaders' mouths taped, adviser removed

FACTORYVILLE — Investigators in northeastern Pennsylvania say they’re investigating a high school cheerleading adviser in connection with an incident in which duct tape was put over the mouths of more than a dozen cheerleaders at a practice last month.

Lackawanna Trail Superintendent Matt Rakauskas says Dina Berrios was removed from her position as the adviser after the Oct. 29 incident. He says she placed tape on the cheerleaders’ mouths during practice in an exercise in nonverbal communication.

Wyoming County District Attorney Jeff Mitchell says state police are investigating the incident. No charges have been filed.

Berrios was the adviser for eight years and is a special education teacher in the district.

Berrios couldn’t be reached for comment.
