[naviga:h3]Karate event slated in New Kensington[/naviga:h3]

NEW KENSINGTON — Valley High School will host the 45th annual Pennsylvania Karate Championships Nov. 11.

Competitors totaling 300 to 500 from Pennsylvania, Canada and surrounding states will be in action in the open tournament. Styles include karate, kung fu, taekwon-do and others.

The event begins at 11 a.m. Tickets will be available at the gate.

[naviga:h3]SRU’s Martin gets player of week[/naviga:h3]

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior defensive end Marcus Martin has been named PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week.

Martin had 6.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 quarterback sacks, forced a fumble and returned it 84 yards for a touchdown in The Rock’s 24-9 win over Clarion Saturday.

[naviga:h3]Rock field hockey falls in tourney[/naviga:h3]

EAST STROUDSBURG — The Slippery Rock University field hockey team was eliminated in the first round of the PSAC Tournament, bowing 5-0 Tuesday at East Stroudsburg.

SRU ended the season at 10-9, posting its first winning season since 1998.
