Butler wrestlers second at Hempfield

Butler's Rob Runyan (103 pounds) and Ian McLaughlin captured all seven of their wrestling matches at the Hempfield Duals to highlight the Golden Tornado's second-place finish.

Butler won six of seven matches, dropping the championship final to Fox Chapel 32-24. It had defeated Hopewell 50-18 Friday and earned a second-round bye, then dispatched Belle Vernon 39-25, all on Friday.

On Saturday, the Tornado defeated Norwin 46-33, Southmoreland 70-3, Altoona 51-24 and Elizabeth-Forward 45-23 before the match against the Foxes, in which Butler forfeited two matches.

"Against Altoona, we pinned the first six guys out," said Butler coach Scott Stoner. "We got a lot of fire out of them. Elizabeth-Forward is a much better team than the score indicated."

In the championship round, a flip of the coin may have affected the outcome.

"The Fox Chapel match, that was the only match all day I couldn't get a good lineup," said Stoner. "They have Brian Letters (ranked No. 1 in WPIAL Class AAA at 152) and I thought if we won the coin toss, I could have bumped everyone up.

"We could have moved everyone away from Letters and manipulate the match," he added.

Jon Sanko was called for a flagrant misconduct, which took three team points away from Butler and will prevent him from wrestling in the upcoming sectionals.

"Obviously, he paid a severe price for that," said Stoner.

Along with Runyan (27-5 overall) and McLaughlin (26-4), Brian Nicelli (112, 22-9), Stewart Rapone (130, 25-9), Josh Pascazi (145, 26-6), Josh Coburn (152, 27-5) and Aaron Pascazi (160, 22-12) each went 6-1 while Alex Evanoff (135, 20-12) was 5-2 and Sanko (22-12) was 4-3.

At heavyweight, Marcus Hough went 4-0 in limited action due to a shoulder injury. McLaughlin and Rapone had five pins each and Coburn four pins.

"Coming into the year, we had planned to have one of the best dual meet seasons," said Stoner, whose team improved to 18-6. "Five of our six losses came down to one match and could've gone either way."

Butler returns to action Feb. 25 for the WPIAL Sectionals at North Allegheny.
