CHERRY VALLEY — Altmire Trucking has been pledged about 10 truckloads of hay to take to cattle ranchers in Montana affected by wildfires, but it still needs trucks to deliver it.

The company has two of its own trucks and two or three other trucks lined up to depart Western Pennsylvania on Sept. 23.

It is still looking for other available tractor-trailers or donations of money to cover expenses for additional trucks, said Terri Miller of Altmire.

Miller said there are a couple of self-employed truck drivers locally who are willing to donate their trucks and time, but cannot foot the roughly $1,200 in fuel costs to get to Montana and back.

The hay has been pledged to the relief effort by local farmers, but has not been collected yet — and the company is still hoping it can deliver all of it. The convoy will be headed to Miles City, Mont., which is where the Montana Department of Agriculture asked it to go, Miller said.

More than 500,000 acres of Montana has burned this year, which has displaced many cattle ranchers and their herds.

The company is collecting monetary donations through a “PA for Montana Fire Victims” account set up at Farmer's National Bank in Eau Claire, P.O. Box E, Eau Claire, Pa., 16030. The donations are tax-deductible and will be collected through Oct. 31.
