Freeport dropped the first game, but rallied to win the final two to defeat Butler, 2-1, in the finals of the Western Pa. Girls Bowling Team Championships Saturday at North Versailles.

Both teams qualified for the PA State Championship this Saturday in Lancaster. Other qualifying teams are McKeesport, Deer Lakes, Penn Trafford and Norwin.

Butler entered the regional quarterfinals as the No. 5 seed while Freeport was No. 6. The Golden Tornado defeated Norwin 170-148, 139-134 while the Yellowjackets bounced Penn Trafford 177-158, 198-198, 190-138. The semifinal round saw Butler defeat top-seed Deer Lakes 144-161, 148-147, 178-148. Freeport topped No. 2 seed McKeesport 144-140, 169-153.

The Golden Tornado won the first game of the finals, 178-159, before the Yellowjackets won the last two games, 166-158 and 182-157, to claim the title.

The top six teams qualified for the team playoff. Freeport edged New Castle by three pins, 3,181 to 3,178, to qualify. Butler’s total after the six baker games was 3,204.

The top five bowlers made the all-tournament team. Butler’s Kelsee McConnell placed sixth with a 565 series, five pins behind McKeesport’s Sara Pawlak. McConnell’s high game was 202.

Harley Kriess was 10th with a 192-539 for the Tornado while Freeport’s Mackensie Livingston was 13th with a 202-537.

Track and Field

Butler’s CJ Singleton finished sixth in the mile run Sunday at the National Indoor Championships at the Armory in New York City.

His time of 4 minutes, 4.89 seconds converts to 4:03.47 for 1,600 meters. By placing among the top six, Singleton became an All-American.

Gary Martin of Warminster won the race in 4:02.34
