Hogue among SR's inductees
SLIPPERY ROCK — When Danielle Hogue was a freshman, she was one of only two players on the roster who did not see time on the Slippery Rock High varsity volleyball team.
Hogue debated whether volleyball was going to pan out for her.
“I thought maybe basketball would be my thing,” Hogue said. “I thought I was going to make more of a difference there and that maybe this volleyball thing wasn’t going to work out.”
Hogue stuck it out and had a breakthrough sophomore season for the Rockets. By her senior year, she was an all-state middle hitter and the co-captain of a team in 2003 that went 18-0 in the regular season and reached the District 10 semifinals.
More than a decade later, it is volleyball that has earned Hogue a spot in the Slippery Rock High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
“I was very surprised, to be honest,” said Hogue, who went on to star for four years on the volleyball court at Westminster College. “I was very excited. It feels good to be recognized. There are a lot of great athletes in the hall of fame at Slippery Rock, some who I really looked up to in a big way.”
Hogue, a 2004 Slippery Rock graduate, will be inducted with three others — Mark Miller (1985), Fred Lucas (1960) and Harry Spataro (1947) — Saturday afternoon.
The four will also be recognized at halftime of the Slippery Rock boys basketball game against Ellwood City later that night.
Hogue, 28, who also started for the Rockets’ basketball team for three years, is a special education teacher at Butler Intermediate High School.
She was an assistant junior high volleyball coach for four years, but is out of coaching now.
Hogue said she hopes to one day coach the sport again. First she will marry fellow Slippery Rock High alum Tim Busi in July.
When Hogue was a freshman at Slippery Rock, the Rockets’ volleyball team struggled mightily.
The team was 6-12 during her sophomore year and then 12-6 her junior season before a perfect regular season record when she was a senior.
Hogue said it was fulfilling to be part of a program that was building.
“We were willing to put the time in,” Hogue said. “I don’t think we could have done it without (former coach Greg) Dugan. It felt really good that last year to be one of the best teams in the district from where we came from in three years.”
Here is a look at the other 2015 Slippery Rock High School Athletic Hall of Fame inductees:
Mark Miller was a star for the Slippery Rock football team as a three-year starter at quarterback. He finished his career with the Rockets with nearly 4,000 yards passing and 45 touchdown passes.
Miller also was a standout in baseball and basketball at the school.
He played college football at Marietta College where he was the starting quarterback for four seasons.
Miller currently lives in Hudson, Ohio, with his wife of 20 years, Kimberly, sons Cole, 16, and Peyton, 13, and daughter, Mackenzie, 17.
Fred Lucas began his high school track career at Portersville before the school merged with Slippery Rock. Lucas, who ran the mile, was the first Slippery Rock runner to qualify for the PIAA Track and Field Championships and placed seventh.
Lucas was also a star runner at Slippery Rock University and is a member of that school’s hall of fame for his achievements on the cross country team.
As a high school track and field coach, Lucas led Schenley High School to three City League championships.
Lucas was recognized with the Tri-State Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award in track and field recently.
Harry Spataro starred for the Rockets’ basketball team.
Spataro spent 33 years as a pilot for Delta Airlines.
