Rochester Road gets extra lane

CRANBERRY TWP — Paving work on Rochester Road was expected to be completed Wednesday, with the overall project wrapping up next week.

The project, which includes widening the road to add an additional eastbound lane, as well as the widening of the bridge in that area, began earlier this year. Additionally, it included the installation of a new traffic signal.

According to Kelly Maurer, township project engineer, crews began milling the stretch of road and Wisconsin Avenue at 10 p.m. Tuesday, working through the night. Paving began at 7 a.m. Wednesday, with two trucks running at a time to get work completed.

Around noon Wednesday, the majority of Rochester Road had been paved, with crews crossing Route 19 to finish Wisconsin Avenue later in the afternoon. Maurer said traffic was being managed remotely to avoid delays, with one lane of traffic maintained in each direction on Rochester.

Maurer said crews had been waiting for about two weeks for good weather, as paving required a minimum of 40 degrees and no rain.

She said expectations were that all paving and line painting would be completed by the end of Wednesday. A change to the traffic signal at the Rochester Road/Wisconsin Road/Route 19 intersection is scheduled Nov. 14.

The traffic signal pole installed on the northwest corner of the road, as well as pedestrian crossings on Route 19 and Wisconsin Way, were upgraded to meet ADA standards. Maurer said the final traffic pattern includes an additional eastbound lane to Route 19, creating two left turning lanes, a through lane and a right turning lane. The pattern will allow for lefts to be made from Rochester Road and Wisconsin Avenue at the same time.

Cleanup of the area and seeding of grass will continue. Maurer said additional widening on Rochester Road to Graham School Road will take place next year as work begins on the Meeder Plan development along the road.
