Slippery Rock's Becker MVP of Tool City Wrestling Tournament

Slippery Rock's Jeff Becker captured the 145-pound division and earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler award at the Tool City Tournament in Meadville Saturday.

Becker (11-0) had pins in the first two rounds before picking up a 10-3 decision in the semifinals. He followed up with an 8-6 overtime victory over Kyle Keane of Clearfield to win the division.

In the 171-pound division, Trevor Gallo (11-1) finished second, losing to Brandon Stearns of General McLane 3-2 to suffer his first loss of the season.

The Rockets' other medalist was Bubby Kearney (215), who placed fifth. Kearney, however, received the award for the quickest pin - seven seconds - in one of the consolation bouts.

Grove City placed 10th out of 16 teams, which also included teams like McGuffey and Reynolds.

"It was the toughest competition we've faced before qualifying tournaments in the past several years," said Powell.

"We chose this type of tournament to test the kids early and they wrestled well and they know how to prepare themselves for bigger tests," Powell added.

The Rockets return to action Wednesday at Mercer.
