Butler Country Club's pool being renovated

Workers remove concrete liner Friday from the pool at the Butler Country Club. The club is renovating its swimming pool through a $1.2 million project. The old concrete liner is being replaced with a more modern PVC liner.
Project expected to be finished by next summer

The Butler County Country Club is renovating its swimming pool.

Paul Keelan, a member of the club's board of directors, said the club is in the middle of fixing its 45-year-old pool through a $1.2 million project.

“When it was built, the pool was expected to last 20 years,” he said. “So it lasted an extra 25.”

Michelle Ruth, the general manager at the club, said the pool's old concrete liner is being removed and replaced with a more modern PVC liner.

“The pool has met its life span,” she said.

The club also will add an additional pool for children next to the pool.

“The baby pool will have water features like other pools in the area,” Keelan said. “It'll have wheels and levers and those sort of things for kids.”

Deconstruction of the pool began shortly after Labor Day, and the pool is expected to be ready next summer.

“We're scrambling to get it done for Memorial Day,” Keelan said.

Keelan said the pool at the club is “L” shaped, with a competition-sized side measuring 82-by-40-feet and a shallow side measuring 42-by-40-feet. The deepest section of the pool is 15 feet.

W.K. Thomas and Associates of Butler is the contractor for the project while Kenneth McDonald Plumbing is handing the plumbing.

Keelan said the club is pleased to have local companies making the renovations.

“We felt it was better to hire local guys,” he said.

The updates to the pool are not the first improvements the club has made in recent years.

Keelan said the club two years ago spent $2 million to redo the sprinklers in the club's golf course.

Ruth said the response from that project has been good.

“We installed a new irrigation system, and it's been wonderful,” she said.

Ruth said the system covered all 18 holes along the course, including the rough.

Three years before that, the club resurfaced its four tennis courts.

“We basically rebuilt the entire court,” Keelan said. “It now has one of the nicest surfaces out there.”

Ruth said that project also was successful.

“It's been very well received,” she said.

Ruth said the completion of the swimming pool will be a nice finale to the club's work.

“I think it'll be the final piece of our renovations,” she said. “It'll be a great focal point in the club.”
