NA latest to pound Butler

The 2004 baseball season keeps going from bad to worse for Butler.

North Allegheny pitcher Josh Hungerman didn't have his best stuff, and the Tigers' leading hitter, Tyler Haak, is sidelined with a separated shoulder. But NA disposed of the Golden Tornado, 13-3, in five innings Tuesday at Pullman Park.

"If you strike out 10 times, allow 14 hits and commit five errors, … you can't win games that way," Butler coach Ron Zawrotuk said.

Winless Butler has allowed 63 runs in six games this season and has been outscored 25-5 in its past two games.

Eight North Allegheny players scored runs Tuesday and seven players knocked in at least one run.

"Our hitting was balanced today, and that's the ideal situation," North Allegheny coach Tim Banner said. "A lot of kids got to play today and everyone went home happy."

Blake Jurena and Tim Merolillo - the Tigers' No. 1 and 2 hitters - combined for five hits, six RBI and four runs scored.

To add to Butler's miseries, first baseman and No. 4 hitter Mike Dorondo was taken to the hospital for X-rays after fouling a ball off his foot in the third inning.

Hungerman struck out 10, scattered five hits and walked one in a complete-game effort. He threw 88 pitches.

Hungerman is 4-0 this spring and North Allegheny remained a game behind Seneca Valley in the Section 5 standings.

"To be honest, this was probably the worst game he's pitched," Banner said. "He was able to get by on location."

Tornado starting pitcher Tony Rossmiller threw 90 pitches in three innings before Zawrotuk went to the bullpen.

"We're only starting three underclassmen, so you can't blame it on youth," Zawrotuk said. "We knew pitching wasn't our strong suit going into the season, and our fielding didn't exactly support them, but they still have to get people out."

Pat Hohn's two-run triple in the fourth pulled Butler within 8-3, but North Allegheny scored five times in the fifth and won by the 10-run rule.

Haak is batting .579 for the Tigers, but might not return until the playoffs. No. 3 hitter Mike Juliano is batting .500 and NA is hitting .310 as a team.

"That's about where we usually are," Banner said. "We only have five seniors on our roster, and that's unheard of for us. But we're getting better as we go."

Second baseman Todd Walker entered the game batting .414 for Butler and had a pair of doubles in three at bats.
