Warriors steamrolled by playoff rival

CHERRY TWP - There's good news and bad news for the Moniteau softball team.

The bad news is the Warriors faced the team that defeated them in the last two District 9 title games and lost 10-0 in five innings Friday.

The good news is the game wasn't for the district championship; it was just an exhibition.

The Raiders came out swinging, collecting eight hits and nine runs in the first two innings.

"It snowballed," said Moniteau coach Danny Hindman. "That would be a good way to put it.

"We had a couple errors and they got some hits and we just never got on track."

"We did well at the plate today," said Raiders coach Greg Fenstermaker. "Even when we didn't hit the ball well, we put it in play and made some things happen."

Senior pitcher Selina Edinger shouldered the defeat, surrendering 11 hits and walking four batters.

At the plate, the Warriors were simply overpowered by Brookville's Jenny Shaffer.

The junior hurler struck out seven and allowed just two base runners - Sara Vinca singled in the fourth and Edinger was hit by a pitch in the sixth.

"She throws like that every day," said Fenstermaker. "She's been throwing every game the last few weeks because our other pitcher is out.

"When you look at the Punxsys and Bellefontes, those are quality teams," added Fenstermaker. "And we play them during the season. Not to put down the KSAC, but you just don't get that kind of competition out here."

Though the District 9 Class AA playoff pairings won't be revealed until Tuesday, Brookville (12-4) and Moniteau (17-3) could very well meet in the title game again if they both win their first round games.

Hindman isn't worried about what Friday's loss might do to his team's confidence.

"I'm not concerned about it at all," he said. "The playoffs are a whole different season and the girls know that. If we happen to play Brookville again, that game will start out 0-0, just like all the others."
