Butler topples Seneca, 11-8

JACKSON TWP - Jumping out to a lead and coming from behind are two things the Butler baseball team struggled to do this season.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Golden Tornado did both successfully to cap a disappointing season with a win over rival Seneca Valley.

Butler led the Raiders 3-0 after the first half inning but found itself trailing 8-7 after four frames.

The Tornado (3-9, 3-16) tallied two unearned runs in the top of the fifth and never trailed again in an 11-8 triumph in the Section 1-AAAA finale for both teams at Raider Field.

Seneca Valley's fielding yielded five errors and allowed four unearned runs to cross the plate.

"That's been the story of our season," said Seneca Valley coach Eric Semega. "We've given more games away this year than other teams have taken from us. That's hard to take."

Butler's Mike Woodward, who relieved starter Jim McCaslin at the start of the fourth inning, was credited with the win after pitching just one inning.

But it was Trevor Dunkel who slammed the door on the home team.

Pitching the final three innings and recording a save, Dunkel retired nine of the SV 10 batters he faced. Kevan Smith's double with two outs in the sixth inning was the only blemish in the pitcher's outing.

"Trevor has gone out this year and done well at times," said Butler coach Ron Zawrotuk. "At other times, he has tried to do too much. But we have counted on him a lot in the later innings of ballgames this season."

Seneca Valley's Cory Mazzoni took the loss after the starter lasted 4

innings, striking out three and walking three.

The Tornado greeted the freshman hurler rudely with three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.

Aaron Ordy led the game off with a walk, followed by back-to-back doubles from Andy Onufrak and McCaslin, the second of which drove in the game's first two runs.

Woodward later scored as a courtesy runner when Anthony Pinto grounded into a double play and Butler grabbed a 3-0 advantage.

"It's usually the other way around," Zawrotuk said of his team taking an early lead. "Just like the last time we played Seneca (a 17-2 Raiders' win), they took us to the cleaners.

"But we still almost gave it away with one bad inning."

Zawrotuk was referring to the bottom of the third.

Butler entered that frame with a 6-1 cushion, but watched Seneca Valley (4-8, 8-11) score five runs on six hits.

That outburst was followed by Smith's two-run home run in the next inning off of Woodward, giving the Raiders their brief 8-7 lead.

Smith ended the game a triple shy of the cycle while Onufrak and Adam Miller each had three hits for Butler.
