Not to be denied

Seneca Valley hangs on to edge Plum, 5-4

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley saw its first lead disappear.

The Raiders weren’t about to let it happen a second time.

After Plum erased a 4-0 deficit, SV scored a go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning before relief pitchers Allen Swanson and Cory Mazzoni shut the door on the Mustangs by retiring six of their final seven batters in a 5-4 high school baseball victory Monday at Raider Field.

Mazzoni entered the game with two outs and one runner on in the top of the sixth inning, getting Plum's Anthony DeFabio on a groundout to end the frame.

The sophomore then picked up the save by setting the Mustangs (0-1) down in order in the seventh, striking out the final two batters.

"He's our ace," SV coach Eric Semega said. "For a sophomore, we're expecting a lot out of him. But he's got the stuff."

The deciding run was scored when Kevan Smith's second double of the game drove in Kevin Rohm with no outs in the bottom of the fifth.

Swanson picked up the win after pitching 2 We innings, striking out four and walking two.

He entered the game with two men on base, no outs and the Raiders (2-0) holding a 4-1 edge in the top of the fourth inning.

Though the Mustangs tie the game by the end of the inning — one run scoring on Tom Bergamasco's groundout and two more coming home on Scott McGough's single — Swanson struck out Josh Bonetto to end the inning with the go-ahead run on second base.

Swanson relieved starter Gabe Grinder after the latter pitched three-plus innings, striking out four and walking two. He was charged with three runs on three hits.

"Gabe did a nice job of starting the game off for us," said Semega. "But then he hit the 60-pitch count, so we took him out. Allen then got us out of a big jam. It was a collective effort from all three of our pitchers."

The Mustangs dug themselves a deep hole early in the game.

Over the first two innings, Seneca Valley tallied four runs on five hits off of Plum starter Ryan Webb.

Six of the first nine batters Webb faced reached base.

The biggest blow came when Smith's first-inning double plated Phil Double and Rohm, which put the Raiders up 2-0.

Along with Smith, Zach Duggan and Dan Jergel both had two-hit days for the Raiders (2-0).
