JACKSON TWP — All of Seneca Valley's offense was packed into one inning.

And it was more than enough for pitcher Cory Mazzoni.

All seven of the Raiders' hits came in a seven-run fourth inning as the team won its Section 1-AAAA opener against North Allegheny, 7-1, in high school baseball Monday.

Mazzoni, who finished with 13 strikeouts and one walk, retired the first 10 batters he faced and had a no-hitter until Dave Bergstrom's single with one out in the top of the fifth inning.

Mazzoni surrendered three hits in the seventh, when Mike Zelik's single drove home Mike O'Neill with the Tigers' only run.

Mazzoni first start of the season March 26 ended with a no-decision against Plum.

"I was getting a bit tired there at the end of the game," said Mazzoni, who managed strikeouts for the last five outs of the game. "But everything seemed to be working today between my fastball, curveball, and my changeup."

"It was excellent," SV coach Eric Semega said of Mazzoni's performance. "He was hitting his spots today, and, to hold (NA) to just one run, I was very pleased with him."

The win is the fourth in a row for Seneca Valley (4-1).

The Raiders' breakout inning began with Rick Raraigh's leadoff walk to Tyler Bream, which was followed by singles from Mazzoni and Andrew Fornadel, with Bream scoring on the latter.

Courtesy runner Jim Burry made it 2-0 when Raraigh's pickoff attempt went over the head of first baseman Mark Lapinski.

Kevin Rohm contributed a run-scoring double, Phil Double had a two-run single and both Ken Walrond and Mazzoni managed RBI base hits as well.

"This was (Raraigh's) second start of the season and he had pitched well," said NA coach Tim Banner. "Today, it was that one inning and we started throwing the ball around."

Jack Connolly relieved Raraigh with two outs in the fourth inning. Raraigh finished the game with four strikeouts, three walks and was charged with six of the seven runs.

"We didn't have a big inning on offense before today," said Semega. "You know, one of those innings where you really put pressure on the other team.

"I would like to see us hit more consistently over seven innings, but it was nice to see seven runs in one inning," added Semega.

Mazzoni ran into a bit of a jam in the top of the fourth inning when, after one out, he hit Jon Wilson and Andy Trettel on back-to-back pitches.

But he then struck out Raraigh swinging and got Lapinski to ground out to end the threat.

The next inning saw the Tigers (4-1, 0-1) load the bases with two outs before Mazzoni fanned pinch-hitter Dylan Songer.
