JACKSON TWP — The numbers are staggering, whether they concern who's gone or who's still there.

Seneca Valley's girls softball team takes a 20-2 record — its first 20-win season this decade — into today's PIAAClass AAAAquarterfinal game with Latrobe.

Here are some of the numbers they've put up in 2006:

• The Raiders have outscored their opponents 165 to 46.

• They average 7.5 runs per game and have scored more than 10 runs eight times.

• They carry a .353 team batting average and pitcher Lauren Pennell has a 1.35 earned run average.

• Seneca Valley has eight players hitting .340 or higher, seven with more than 20 hits and at least 13 RBI, six with 14 or more runs scored.

The Raiders even have eight players who have laid down at least one sacrifice bunt or hit a sacrifice fly.

"That's the way it's been all year,"veteran coach George Trew said. "Lindsay Troyer is our No. 8 hitter and hit a grand slam to win one playoff game.

"Dana Hughes, our leadoff hitter, hit a three-run shot to beat Hempfield. You never know where the offense is coming from."

You just know that it's coming.

"I'm not a strikeout pitcher,"Pennell said. "I have to rely on my fielders, and they do the job every day. If I give up a couple of runs, I know we're going to score a bunch."

Seneca Valley has committed only 26 errors — barely one a game — all season.

Pennell has 82 strikeouts and 52 walks in 111 innings, not dominant numbers for fast pitch softball, but she's 15-1.

The Raiders were bounced from the WPIALplayoffs in the first round by Hempfield last season. Aly Intihar, Tina Mangola and Julie Marlowe were among the seniors who graduated from that team.

As collegiate freshmen this year:

• Intihar made All-Mid-Atlantic Region for Cornell University, leading the team with a .351 batting average and finishing second in the Ivy League with 11 home runs.

• Mangola won the Ohio Athletic Conference triple crown, leading that league with a .489 batting average, 12 homers and 49 RBIwhile earning third-team All America for Ohio Northern.

• Marlowe batted .296 and was second on the team with 40 hits at John Carroll University.

• Ashley Watkins, the Raiders' No. 9 hitter, is batting .350. No. 7 hitter Kelsey Gray is hitting .381.

Despite losing talent like that, Seneca Valley posted its 13th winning season in 14 years, reached the WPIALplayoffs for the eighth time in that span and reached the WPIAL championship game for the third time since 1992.

"It's the continuity we've had in coaching with myself and (previous coach)Greg Hayward,"Trew said. "We've developed a lot of nice players over the years.

"These girls play a lot of softball over the summer and they come to us ready to play."

And they've played together all year.

Pennell, Troyer, Liz Dorogy and Nicole Lollo are the team's seniors.

"There's been no drama this year,"Troyer said. "We don't have any superstars. We're a team. We get along well and we all want to win."

"Playing together has been the key,"Lollo agreed. "We won't let each other get down. If someone fails in a particular situation, someone else will succeed."

Lollo will play softball at Clarion University next year. Pennell will play at Grove City. Troyer and Dorogy are not planning to play in college.

"Hitting has been the big difference this year,"Dorogy said. "If we get off to a bad start and fall behind early, we know it's not over. It's nice knowing you can come back.

"We didn't work together last year. That's something we learned this year."

"Our defense has been good, our pitching has been good,"Troyer said. "But if you don't hit the ball and score some runs, you're not gonna win. We don't have that problem."
