The 1995 Seneca Valley baseball team currently stands alone in the program's history.

But it may soon have some company.

The 2007 squad will play for the PIAA Quad A title when it takes on Souderton at 2 p.m. Saturday at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona.

"They're fantastic," Butler baseball coach Dave Florie said of this year's SV team. "You talk about a team with the total package, they've got it —great pitching, hitting and defense."

Florie was Seneca Valley's coach in 1995 and was carried off the field by his players at Harrisburg's Riverside Stadium following the Raiders' 7-3 victory over Williamsport in the PIAA Class AAA championship game.

While this season's squad has lost just two games (Plum, Bethel Park), the '95 team encountered a few more bumps in the road en route to the state final.

"It was a surprise that we won it all that year," said Florie. "We had only two starters back from the 1994 team that won the WPIAL title.

"And we got off to a real rough start," he added. "At one point, we were 3-5 in (Section 5-AAA). From that point on, every game was a must-win."

The Raiders didn't win their section in 1995. That honor went to North Allegheny, while SV had to battle Shaler and Butler for the final playoff spot from the section.

SV failed to defend its WPIAL championship from a year earlier as North Catholic grabbed the District 7 crown, defeating Seneca Valley in the WPIAL semifinals in the process.

But the Raiders found revenge to be sweet.

With a spot in that year's state title game on the line, SV paid North Catholic back with a 10-2 thumping in the PIAA semifinals.

In the end, it was Seneca Valley's players with the state gold medal around their necks and a 20-7 overall record to go with it.

One key to the team's success that season was pitching.

"Brent Ruby was our top starter and we also had Todd Raithel," said Florie. "At mid-season, we were looking for another guy who could pitch for us, and we found Shon Norris, kind of by accident.

"We were at a practice one day and it was raining," Florie added. "Some of the guys just started throwing the ball around and Shon was one of them. We figured we'd give him a shot."

Norris provided clutch innings in relief for the Raiders, and, ironically, he was on the mound when SV recorded the final out against Williamsport and was credited with a save after pitching 2X\c innings.

Raithel earned the win after pitching the first 5Z\c innings, ending the season with a perfect 6-0 mark.

SV found itself down 1-0 after the first half inning against Williamsport, but the Raiders' bats generated four runs of their own in the bottom of the first and they never trailed again.

Norris, Ruby and Tony Felt all contributed key hits in the four-run inning.

Current SV coach Eric Semega was an assistant coach on the 1995 team.

"As an assistant coach, my role was a lot different from what it is now as a head coach," he said. "But one thing I do remember from that year's team is that those players believed.

"And that's very similar to this year's team," Semega added. "Our (current) players don't wish or hope to win, they know they have a chance to win every time they take the field."

Seneca Valley (21-2) has had a memorable season in 2007, regardless of what takes place Saturday in Altoona.

"We've told these kids that they don't need a medal around their necks to show us how good of a team they are," said Semega. "But they sure would like to win it."
