Dave Florie wanted to make sure he could evaluate every player on his Butler baseball team.

The coach used all 20 players on his roster and made five pitching changes. His tinkering almost worked as the Golden Tornado rallied to send the game into extra innings before falling 5-3 to Hempfield in the first game at refurbished Pullman Park Monday afternoon.

Florie's lineup was filled with reserves. That was by design.

"Those guys practice hard and they deserve the opportunity to play in an exhibition game," Florie said. "Our plan was for them to keep it close and then bring our starters back under pressure, and they responded."

Butler fell behind 3-0 after an inning and a half, but spent the rest of the game chipping away at the deficit.

The Golden Tornado (3-2) scored a run in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Eric King and scored another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a run-scoring single by RyanArmahizer.

Butler trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but was able to push a run across on another sacrifice fly by Darren Blakley.

The Golden Tornado had an opportunity to end the game, loading the bases with one out, but managed just the one run.

Alek Bollinger got the start for Butler and was removed with two outs in the second inning. Nick Rossmiller relieved him and pitched three scoreless innings to keep the Tornado in the game.

"He did a very good job," Florie said. "A very good job."

Florie also used Tim Geibel and Matt McCormick in relief, then brought Bollinger back into the game on the mound in the eighth inning, where the left-hander surrendered the final two Hempfield runs.

"That's how we've been doing it so far," Florie said. "We're a pitching staff by committee. We're going to put someone out there and they will pitch as long as they are effective. It's been working pretty good that way. I have six pitchers who can pitch at any time."

Hempfield used three pitchers. Starter Alex Haines received a no-decision, pitching five strong innings.

Kyle Anderson relieved him and was in line for the save before giving up the run in the seventh.

Jon Murphy closed out the seventh inning and pitched a scoreless eighth to get the win for Hempfield (4-1).
