MARS — New Castle baseball coach Don Runyon was waiting for his team's offense to have that breakout game.

His wish came true Wednesday when the Red Hurricanes erupted for 12 runs on 19 hits in a 12-5 win over Mars at Marburger Field.

New Castle's bats chased Planets starter Ryan Schroth from the game after giving up four runs on six hits in only 1Z\c innings.

"This is the first time we've busted out this season," said Runyon. "Normally, we're good for about seven or eight hits a game."

Schroth took the loss after striking out three and walking none.

"Ryan probably threw about 30 pitches on Monday, helping to close the door on Ambridge (a 13-7 win)," said Mars coach Andy Bednar. "This early in the season, it's tough to come back in just two days.

"New Castle just swung the bats really well today," he added.

Mars relievers Blaise Taggart and Andrew Rush each gave up four runs after working 2X\c innings.

New Castle (4-3, 2-2) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.

Even though Schroth struck out the side in the top of the first, the Red Hurricanes took advantage of a Mars fielding error when Joe Perrotta drove in a run with a double and John Heinrich followed with an RBI single.

Both tallies came with two outs.

The Planets (3-5, 1-2) responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when Chris Herold walked, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Luke Gruber's single to right field.

New Castle added two more runs in the second and three in the fourth for a 7-1 lead.

Meanwhile, Mars' batters could not muster the big inning they needed against New Castle starter Joe Surgenavic.

The right-hander struck out 10 and walked three, giving up five runs on eight hits in the victory.

A key point in the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Mars, trailing 7-1, had runners on first and second with one out.

Surgenavic struck out D.J. Delucia before Zach Bear drove in Schroth with a single.

The next batter, Justin Vancheri, grounded out to end the frame. What could have been a big inning for the Planets yielded just one run.

Mars' Lee Lawver managed a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, but New Castle still held a sizable lead at 8-3.

Schroth and Drew Glavin tallied RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring.

Notes: New Castle's Nick Colella reached base five times, with a single, two doubles, a hit-batsman and once on a fielding error. ... Eric Haybarger collected four singles for the Hurricanes, while Schroth had three for Mars.
