JACKSON TWP — The strategy Seneca Valley baseballcoach Eric Semega used spoke of the confidence he had in Mike Eonta.

It worked to perfection.

With the Raiders tied with Shaler, 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Semega had Phil Double lay down a sacrifice bunt to move courtesy runner Brandon Durbin to second base.

The Raiders now had a runner in scoring position, but there were also two outs.

Titans' reliever Andy Gapsky never got the third out.

Eonta stepped to the plate and drilled the ball over leftfielder Mike Walsh's head for a double that scored Durbin in a 4-3 victory Saturday at Raider Field.

The game began on Friday, but was suspended in the top of the seventh inning with the score tied at 2-2 because of lightning.

"It was a curveball," Eonta said of the last pitch of the game. "I was just trying to stay relaxed and not try to do too much."

Walsh was playing in a few steps to keep the winning run from scoring on a groundball base hit.

"I didn't know if the ball was going to be caught or not," Eonta added. "I just saw the leftfielder backing up."

"I figured Phil is a pretty good bunter," said Semega. "And Mike has hit the ball hard every time this year. I wanted to try and win the game right there."

The inning started with senior first baseman Dan Jergel reaching on a base hit, allowing Semega to bring in the speedy Durbin.

"(Gapsky) felt that the burden was all his," said Shaler coach Bob Hinds of his reliever. "But I told him that he didn't lose this game all by himself."

Saturday's action picked up with Shaler courtesy runner John Orr at first base and one out in the top of the seventh.

SV's Cory Mazzoni relieved Kyle Helisek, the Raiders' starter, and struck out Tom Lutz before Justin Yeckel and Ed Skonieczny managed back-to-back base hits to give their team a 3-2 lead.

In the home half of the seventh frame, the Raiders (6-1, 3-1) received a leadoff base hit from Ken Walrond and the senior moved to second base on a wild pitch.

After Gapsky struck out Shaine Patsilevas and Mazzoni, Andrew Fornadel smacked a base hit to leftfield, scoring Walrond to tie the game.

Gapsky then got Tyler Bream to ground out to send the game into extra innings.
