BUTLER TWP — Thursday's PIAA Class AAA baseball quarterfinal between Chartiers Valley and Grove City featured poor defensive play by both teams.

But the pitching made up for it.

CV's Dan Colavincenzo and the Eagles' Randy Risch each pitched the single-game maximum of nine innings, after which the game was tied at 1.

The Colts (15-7) scored two runs in the top of the 10th, then received a scoreless bottom of the 10th from reliever Cory Rekasie in a 3-1 victory over GC at Highfield Park.

The Colts (four) and Eagles (five) combined for nine errors in the game.

CV will be making its first appearance in the state semifinals Monday against the winner of today's game between Moon and Bellefonte.

After Risch gave up just one unearned run on six hits in nine innings, Grove City sent reliever Jason Revesz to the mound in the top of the 10th.

The Colts' Andy McIntyre began the inning by reaching on a fielding error, the Eagles' fifth and final miscue of the day.

With one out, Tyler Mroz was hit by a pitch and the runners advanced to second and third following a balk by Revesz.

Luke Horew broke the stalemate with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring McIntyre.

Mike Perhosky followed with a single that plated Mroz.

The Eagles (18-6) kept hope alive in the bottom of the inning when Jeff Revesz smacked a two-out single, but Rekasie struck out Derrick Brown to end the game.

All three of the Colts' runs were unearned.

"We've struggled defensively from time to time this season," said Grove City coach Pat Forese. "That happens sometimes. It was still a very winnable game, but we couldn't execute when we had opportunities."

The Eagles had no better chance than in the bottom of the ninth.

With the bases loaded and two outs, leadoff man Alex Miklos hit a groundball that pulled first baseman Mroz far off the bag.

Mroz fielded the ball and made an awkward throw to Colavincenzo, who came over to cover first base.

The umpire quickly made an out call, though Colavincenzo hadn't secured the ball.

Brown crossed home plate and would have counted as the winning run, but the call stood.

"The pitcher never secured the ball," said Forese. "But the umpire was anxious to make the big out call and he made it too soon."

Risch struck out four and walked four.

He survived a shaky first inning when he gave up three hits and one unearned run, which came when he tossed an errant pick-off throw to third base.

"Randy gets better as the game goes on," said Forese. "Teams might be able to get to him early, but then he settles down."

Grove City tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Miklos singled to score Jon Anderson.

Colavincenzo was the winning pitcher after striking out six, walking three and giving up one unearned run on just three hits in nine innings.

"He threw the best I've ever seen him throw," said Colts' coach Jim Jaskowski. "And it was without great defense."
