City of sluggers
GROVE CITY — The way Alex Miklos sees it, he has the easiest job in the world.
Miklos, a senior centerfielder for the Grove City High baseball team, sets the table as the leadoff hitter for the Eagles.
And this table seems to always be set as if it were Thanksgiving Day.
“It's a lot of fun hitting at the top of this order,” Miklos said. “It's very low pressure. If I get on, I'm going to score. Someone's going to drive me in. If I don't get on, someone else will and they will score.”
Grove City (11-1) has been doing a lot of scoring in recent baseball history. But this season, the Eagles are crossing the plate in a myriad of ways.
The Eagles are averaging 11 runs per game and have clubbed 18 home runs. Seven different players have hit at least one dinger this season.
Easy out? There is none.
“We've had some good hitting lineups in the past,” said Grove City baseball coach Pat Forese. “The ones in 2003 and 2007 stick out. But this one is so good 1-through-9.”
If it wasn't for a slow start, the numbers would be even more startling.
Forese gathered his team together after stumbling start at the plate and reinforced a tried and true slump-busting method.
“Hit the ball up the middle and the other way,” Forese said. “We drilled that and drilled that.”
It worked. And even more surprisingly, the inside-out approach led to a home run binge.
No. 3 hitter Jeff Revesz has hit six homers in just 31 at-bats this season. He has 22 in his career, which ties him with his elder brother, Bob, for the career lead at the school.
Miklos has hit four homers to go with 10 stolen bases.
In a two-team doubleheader last week, Miklos had two infield singles and four stolen bases in a game against Slippery Rock, then came back to slug two homers in the nightcap against Commodore Perry.
“I like to be versatile,” Miklos said. “I like to utilize anything I can to get the job done.”
Four Grove City players have hit multiple longballs this season — Jon Anderson also has three and O.J. Orlowski two in only 15 at-bats.
The key to the power surge.
“Don't try to hit one,” Miklos said. “There's a little bit of friendly competition, but we don't set out to do it. There's some razzing that goes on.”
Like when No. 9 hitter Torin Smith went deep over the weekend for his first of the season.
Smith had just switched to a new bat when his home run was hit.
“We told him it was the bat,” Miklos said.
Miklos, Jeff Revesz and Jason Revesz, the No. 5 hitter, have more in common than just their places in the potent Grove City lineup. All three will play next season at Division I Kent State University.
Miklos was recruited by many Division II and III schools, but opted for Kent State.
Jeff Revesz said the Golden Flashes were his No. 1 choice and he may have a chance to play there right away.
“As long as I keep hitting,” he said.
Hitting hasn't been a problem for Jeff Revesz, who has a 1.226 slugging percentage this season.
Like Miklos, he said it is a joy to hit in a lineup like this one.
“If I have a bad day at the plate, I know someone else will pick me up,” Jeff Revesz said.
Behind their scorching hot lineup and an equally impressive pitching staff that has logged a 1.53 ERA this season, the Eagles are looking to put past playoff disappointments behind them.
Last season, after a 17-2 regular season, the Eagles were upset by Warren in the first round of the District 10 playoffs.
“That has made me and all of us hungrier,” Miklos said. “We've focused every game, every at-bat on not letting that happen again.”
The starting lineup for the Grove City High baseball team has been hard to pitch around this season. Only two of the nine hitters have not hit a home run and only two have a batting average below .300.Name Avg HRAlex Miklos .417 4Brian Murone .500 1Jeff Revesz .548 6Jon Anderson .424 3Jason Revesz .308 0O.J.
