Sentiment misguided

This is in response to the editorial by RV in the March 10 Butler Eagle.

While RV is to be commended for his support of mask-wearing, his overall sentiment is misguided. Sen. Ron Johnson’s idea of reading the entire contents of the most recent stimulus bill in order to inform the public of its contents might seem noble on the surface to some.

However, this stunt served only to delay the inevitable passage of badly-needed aid, and his failure to raise similar objections to the even more expensive tax cut bill of 2017 would suggest another motive.

The tax cut bill was not read out loud, was pushed through Congress and signed into law within three days, and primarily benefited millionaires and billionaires.

The 2021 stimulus bill, on the other hand, provides badly needed assistance directly to working families who have been devastated by the pandemic and continue to struggle with basic necessities each day.

Why, one must ask, is there so much less objection to tax cuts for the extremely wealthy than to assistance for poor and working families during a global pandemic?

Time and again, it is Republicans who do the most to benefit the wealthy and the least to help those in need. The fact that not one Republican member of Congress voted for the stimulus bill this month is a testament to that.
