Center Twp. supervisor race draws 5 candidates
Republicans will choose between three candidates and Democrats will choose between two running for Center Township supervisor in the primary election Tuesday.
The Republicans are Nicholas Angiolieri, Mike Kaltenbach and Don Pringle, and the Democrats are Phil Heasley and Tom Schiebel. The five are vying for one six-year term opening on the board of supervisors, and current supervisor Ron Flatt is not running for reelection.Angiolieri is a member of Center Township's planning commission, and said his experience on that board is what spurred him to run for supervisor. He said he wants to manage growth in the township in part for his children, who are growing up in the area.“I'm reviewing all the plans, seeing how the township's going, and I'd like to have a greater say in what the township does,” Angiolieri said.
“I really want to focus on managed growth and recreation. Not like Cranberry or Jackson, where there's plans everywhere, but a little growth isn't bad — maybe a new restaurant or a few new businesses would be nice.”Current Center Township supervisor Bob Sloan said at Wednesday's meeting that Angiolieri is his son-in-law, but that he did not encourage him to run for supervisor.Kaltenbach said he is running to listen to residents of the township who speak at supervisors meetings. He also said he wants to more closely look at some township ordinances.“I noticed there was some inconsistency with ordinances, that sort of pushed me to run,” Kaltenbach said.“As a representative of the township, you want to make sure the concerns of the residents are properly addressed and that their voices are heard and the ordinances are upheld," Kaltenbach continued.
Pringle said he also wants to work with residents of the township and have meetings be more open forum. He said he has run for the position in the past to achieve this goal.“I think No. 1, we should be listening to Center Township residents more clearly,” Pringle said. “I have run a couple times because I want to put faith back in the government. Center Township has had a lot of problems lately and I think they could use new people on the board.”Heasley ran for the state House of Representatives last year, and said he wants to run for supervisor in his hometown. He said on the campaign trail last year that one of the biggest requests from residents was getting a community park in the township, which is one of his goals if elected.
“Center is one of the biggest tax centers in Butler, and we don't have a park to go to,” he said. “We need new leadership. I'm not saying I'm the one, but getting other voices on the board to elevate the other voices is what we need.”Schiebel served as a supervisor for Center Township starting in 2006, and said he wants to run again to change some board and financial policies. He said having township supervisors getting health care through their positions is one policy he would change for financial reasons.“I've just seen a lot of things that I don't agree with, a lot of policies,” Schiebel said. “That would be the first thing I do is get the supervisors off health care.”
