State police say an elderly man was possibly having a medical issue Monday evening when he struck the back of a trooper's cruiser parked on the side of a Butler road.

The trooper, who was not injured, was in his patrol car around 6:45 p.m. on Morton Avenue after making an earlier traffic stop, but he was not injured, authorities said.

Police initially suspected a hit-and-run crash when the driver of the car, described as a tan or gold Buick, did not stop after hitting the rear bumper of the cruiser.

Moments before, the trooper had pulled over another driver for a traffic violation, police said. The officer had returned to his cruiser and was completing paperwork when his cruiser was hit.

Police canvassed the area, but they could not find the Buick. A short time later, however, a car matching its description was reported “driving erratically” on Route 8 north of Butler.

Investigators said they eventually pulled over the car as it was headed toward Slippery Rock.

The driver, an 82-year-old Butler man who authorities did not identify, appeared “confused,” police said, and he may have been suffering a diabetic medical emergency.

A Superior Ambulance crew was called and tended to the man before he was released.

The cruiser and the man's car both sustained minor damage.

Police could not say if any charges would be filed.
