Police charge alleged apartment burglar

A Butler man was charged with entering and burglarizing an East Butler apartment after its resident installed a surveillance camera when she began noticing small amounts of cash going missing.

Police charged Donald R. Frederick, 59, Thursday with felony burglary and criminal trespassing. He also was charged with misdemeanor theft and receiving stolen property. The charges were made after the resident went to the Troop D barracks in Butler to show them footage, according to the police complaint. An arrest warrant was issued for Frederick.

The woman spoke with a trooper March 20. She said she took a “cruise” for several days in October 2019 and asked Frederick to take care of her cat during her absence. Frederick was given a key to the apartment, and when she got back from her cruise, Frederick returned her key.

Earlier this month, she noticed that before going to work, she had $190 in her bedroom. But when she returned, she found only $90.

A few days later, the victim installed a security camera inside the apartment and left $12 in her bedroom. She then left her apartment, and within an hour, she received a notification that the camera detected motion in her apartment. When she got back, she watched the footage and said she saw Frederick in her apartment. She also noticed that $10 was missing.

Police said the victim changed her locks, and since then, she hasn't lost any money.
