It wasn't pretty, but Union girls still drop Moniteau
CHERRY TWP — Andrea Mortimer was 0-for-7 from the field and the Union girls basketball team had more turnovers and fewer rebounds than Moniteau.
The Damsels still led 20-10.
Such is life when you are an undefeated juggernaut.
Union (7-0, 2-0) rolled through the second quarter and led 46-22 at the half then cruised in the final 16 minutes for an 82-46 victory against the Warriors Tuesday night.
"We knew we were going to have to play the perfect game to beat them," said Moniteau coach Mark Yeager. "We didn't."
The Warriors (3-4, 1-1) certainly tried. They had Union worried in the second quarter.
Moniteau fell behind 9-0 early in the first quarter but slowly and steadily fought its way back into the game. It cut the lead to 22-15 before Union wrested the momentum and a lot of basketballs away from the Warriors.
The Damsels forced a plethora of turnovers in roaring out on a 16-3 run to build a 20-point lead near the end of the half.
It seemed for every two points Moniteau scored, Union tallied four.
That's because Union's pressure defense and up-tempo play not only forces turnovers, but also forces quick and poor shots from the opponent.
That happened again against Moniteau, as the Warriors shot just 26 percent from the field.
"Our goal is to make them take quick shots and keep them out of their game and out of their offense," said Union coach Josh Meeker. "Hey, if they can play a shootout game, then so be it."
Moniteau had no desire to get into a track meet with Union. But the Damsels' pressure forces even the most cool and collected teams to get itchy trigger fingers.
"That was the whole thing about controlling the tempo," Yeager said. "They killed us in transition and hurt us pretty bad on the press. I thought we weathered the storm in the first quarter."
The storm was just beginning, though. Union hit Moniteau with a regular whiteout.
"I'm a big Duke fan," Meeker said. "That's one thing they have always done over the years. Teams get close and then, boom! A two or three minute span and the other team is out of it."
Mortimer shook off her poor shooting start to finish with 22 points and 11-of-22 shooting from the floor. Bethany Koch also scored 22 points. She had 18 at halftime.
But even when Mortimer was struggling, Meeker had little worries about his team piling up points on the scoreboard.
Nine different Damsels scored in the game.
"This team is one of those teams where even if Beth and Andrea aren't having a good night, I have some other girls who can score," Meeker said.
Tiffany Corle added 12 points for the Damsels.
Kristin Baronetski scored 14 points and added 12 rebounds for the Warriors.
Alyssa Deal added 13 points and broke the Moniteau school scoring record. She now has 1,159 points, eclipsing the mark of 1,157 set by Dee Slater in 1984.
