Judge permits Monroeville school district to arm guards
MONROEVILLE — A judge has agreed to allow Gateway School District in Allegheny County to arm its 13-officer security team.
The district’s second petition to allow its new police force to carry firearms and issue citations on school property was approved this week in Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas.
The Monroeville district’s first request was denied. While that ruling was being appealed, district officials submitted an amended petition.
Revisions included the elimination of language giving security guards arresting power. The 13 guards are all retired police officers already on the district’s payroll.
