Blackhawk ends Butler girls lacrosse season

Golden Tornado fall behind early in playoff loss

CHIPPEWA — The tone of this game was established seconds into it.

Blackhawk seized possession of the ball immediately and stormed toward the Butler net, only to have leading goal scorer Nicole Cuddy thwarted by Golden Tornado goalkeeper Carley Gesin.

It didn’t matter. The Cougars’ Bria Braddock scored the game’s first goal 22 seconds in. Blackhawk scored four times in the first five minutes and cruised to a 14-3 victory in a first-round WPIAL Division 2 girls lacrosse playoff game Friday night.

“We wanted to control play right away this time because Butler jumped on us for two quick goals in our regular seasion game (an 8-4 Blackhawk win),” Blackhawk coach Kevin White said. “We didn’t want that to happen again.”

Top-seeded Blackhawk (15-1) put away its 15th straight win early, taking a 10-1 lead into halftime.

Freshman Eliza Drohan scored the Tornado’s only goal of the first half, cutting the Butler deficit to 5-1 with 17:57 left before intermission. Drohan paced Butler with approximately 50 goals this year.

But there was no stopping the Cougars.

“They are awfully good ... very fast,” first-year Butler coach Ashley Argyros said. “We had to settle down and I thought we did that in the second half. I think nerves got to us early tonight.”

Butler senior Hannah Welty — one of the team’s captains — admitted the Tornado got out of their game early.

“We were worried about the score too much,” she said. “We still had to play our game and it took us too long before we started to do that.

“We possessed the ball much better in the second half. In the first half, it seemed like we were always chasing them.”

Welty scored the game’s final goal with 24 seconds left. Sophia Roskovski also scored for Butler in the second half.

Cuddy wound up scoring three goals for Blackhawk. She has plenty of company on the Cougar scoring charts.

“We’ve got eight girls with more than 20 goals,” White said. “We score a lot and our speed helps, but our passing is our biggest strength. I liked the way we kept things moving offensively tonight.”

Casey Taylor scored fouer goals for Blackhawk with Gianna Piocquidio adding three and Evi Malagise two. The Cougars are averging 14 goals per game.

Blackhawk’s lone loss is a 9-7 decision to Mars in the seasion opener. The Cougars also defeated the Planets — the WPIAL’s No. 2 seed — 12-9 ghis year.

Blackhawk had a 24-8 edge in shots on goal Friday. Butler ended its season at 11-5 after sporting a losing record last year.

“I’m proud of the way these girls turned this program around in just one year,” Argyros said.

“Last year, we were just fighting to get through the season,” Welty said. “This year, we were a lot more motivated. Our coaches are extremely knowledgable of the game and we learned a lot.”
