CALLERY — Borough residents will not see a tax increase this year as officials say the local government is doing fine financially, and that a recent sale has given the town a comfortable boost in revenue.

Callery, which has a population of around 400 people, will spend $172,367 in 2019, and expects to bring in as much in income.

Council President Ed Conway said he is happy with the borough budget and feels the town’s finances are sustainable for the future.

“Our budget is very sound,” Conway said. “We had a large influx of money that we received from the selling of the collection system for the sewer to Evans City, which pumped us up pretty good.”

Even without the sale, he added, the borough would not have had to dip into savings.

“Even without that we had no intentions of raising any of our taxes in the borough,” Conway said.

Still, as one of the smallest boroughs in the county, he said it always has to make sure not to overextend itself.

“We have to be careful,” Conway said.

He added that the collection system would have ultimately required expensive repairs that down the line the borough would likely have been unable to afford.
