Travelers can get Turnpike alertsHARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are rolling out an emergency notification system to let motorists stranded in accident backups get updates to their cell phones about aid and cleanup efforts.Turnpike CEO Mark Compton said Thursday that he believes the system is the first of its kind in the nation. He also says communication gaps are a major problem during such backups.People in the vicinity of a potential long-term accident stoppage on a road with limited access will get an emergency notification allowing them to register for the updates.Registering will give emergency managers information about a motorist’s location and vehicle. People who don’t register can still see the updates on www.511pa.com.
Former executive embezzles $740KERIE — A former Pennsylvania credit union executive faces up to three decades in prison after acknowledging she stole more than $740,000 by making bogus loans and deposits and withdrawing funds from member accounts without permission.Karen Schenck pleaded guilty in an Erie federal court on Tuesday to embezzlement of credit union funds.Schenck was fired in August 2015 from her position as CEO of the Corry Area Schools Federal Credit Union.Authorities say the 50-year-old Bear Lake woman embezzled money from the credit union between January 2008 and August 2015.Her sentencing is scheduled for late April. Her lawyer declined to comment until then.
Director bills his costs to agencyPHILADELPHIA — Federal investigators say the Philadelphia-based director of national parks in the northeastern United States billed personal vacation costs to the agency and improperly accepted free vacation lodging from an underling.The Interior Department’s inspector general published a report Thursday saying National Park Service northeast regional director Michael Caldwell broke federal travel guidelines on at least eight trips.The report says Caldwell admitted he did personal travel at the government’s expense, taking pay on days he wasn’t working and renting larger vehicles to bring guests.A Park Service spokesman said Caldwell is being temporarily reassigned while possible discipline is under consideration.
