Driver gets house arrest in fatal crashLANCASTER — A central Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to a minimum term of six months house arrest in a fatal accident last year in which authorities said he was texting while driving.A Lancaster County judge Wednesday imposed a six- to 23-month sentence on 25-year-old Phong Chadd Pham of Lancaster but spared him a jail sentence.Pham pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the July 2015 crash in Strasburg Township that killed 78-year-old Eva Kunkle. Prosecutors said phone records indicated that Pham had been text-messaging immediately before the accident.Pham apologized to Kunkle’s relatives, saying “My whole life I’ve always tried to do things right.”
GM sued over fire that damaged homesHARRISBURG — General Motors has been sued over a 2014 car fire that caused more than $450,000 in damage to two central Pennsylvania homes.Erie Insurance Exchange and four of its policy holders claim the blaze resulted from a defect GM officials didn’t adequately address.The fire began in the engine compartment of a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix owned by Bruce and Sheri Dohner, spread to their garage and engulfed their home. A neighbor’s home also was damaged.The car was among 1.1 million recalled by GM for a defect that allowed oil to leak onto the engine’s hot manifolds. The lawsuit says the Dohners got the work done, but the repair didn’t work.
Armored car guard robbers soughtPLYMOUTH MEETING — Police and federal agents are seeking help in finding two men who assaulted and robbed an armored car guard at a mall in suburban Philadelphia.The FBI and Plymouth Township police jointly released surveillance video on Wednesday that shows the suspects just prior to the Dec. 19 robbery at the Plymouth Meeting Mall.The men attacked a Loomis guard delivering cash to the Montgomery County mall in a service corridor around 8 a.m. before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of the money.Authorities say the suspects left in a dark-colored Chevy Tahoe with a model date between 1992 and 2000. The guard was taken to a hospital and later released.
