SARVER — For Amanda and Steve Miller, you could say the soap-making business runs in the family.

The Millers established Blue Goose Naturals nearly six months ago and began creating and selling lotions, bar soaps, body scrubs, lip balms, body sprays, bug sprays, shampoos and conditioners.

“My aunt used to make soap when I was young, and I remember her doing that,” said Amanda Miller, 27. “And we had an interest in it, so she showed us some of what she does, and then we just kind of took off from there and made it into our business.”

Rich sweet and floral scents permeate their workshop, which for now, is a cozy trailer adjacent to their Sarver home. Soaps and lotions are stacked in boxes. Some of the bar soaps sit in trays for a month or more, to mellow the strength of the lye ingredient.

The Millers said their goal is to move into a bigger workshop and have the business support their family full time.

For now, however, they're having fun experimenting with making different kinds of soaps with olive oil, salt and goats' milk bases, and lotions with goat's milk and aloe bases.

Goat's milk-based products, both the bar soaps and lotions, are the Millers' best-sellers. They mostly sell their products at craft shows, but they also have tables set up at Freedom Farms Market, Schnur's Custom Meat Market and Local Motion Hair Design salon.

“If it's a two-day show, we may have to come back and make one type again,” said Steve Miller, 34. “But in a month's time, I would say we make two dozen of each type of lotion, if we are doing shows every weekend.”

Different kinds of soaps serve different purposes, too.“The salt soaps ... are more for if you really want to heavily exfoliate your skin, because they have an abrasive in them,” he said. “Where the olive oils are more a lathery, smooth soap.”“That has a relaxing effect, too,” 'said Amanda Miller.She said some of the products, particularly the salves, can have a healing effect for the skin, too.“We use essential oils and herbal oils that have healing properties to them, and they seem to help a lot of people with skin dryness, eczema, even fungal issues,” she said.After the harsh winter, Amanda Miller said that is a common complaint when talking to others about skincare.Many of the ingredients they use, such as goat's milk and honey, are local.The Millers both admit it's an extra challenge to start up the business with their other jobs and caring for their young son, Mitchell, who turns 2 next month, but say it has been a worthwhile adventure.They also hope to begin selling products on their website soon, at www.bluegoosenaturals.com.
