Second fire in four months destroys house
FREEPORT — The state police fire marshal is investigating an early Sunday morning blaze that destroyed a house on Washington Street.
No one was injured in the 4 a.m. fire at the one-story house with a basement. The structure has been unoccupied since September following a previous fire that left it damaged.
“The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time,” Trooper DuWayne Baird, a deputy fire marshal, said Monday of the weekend fire, “and it’s still under investigation.”
Damage was estimated at $150,000. Gregory Shoop owns the house, which was insured.
A neighbor called 911 after seeing the fire, according to authorities. By the time Freeport volunteer firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out from what was the roof.
Baird noted the house was still under renovation from the first fire Sept. 9, and there was no dry wall ceiling.
“It was open trusses and there was no insulation,” Baird said.
Fire crews had no other option but a “surround and drown” strategy, said Tom Sweeny Jr., chief of the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department.
It took 48 minutes before the fire was out, he said, calling the home a “total loss.”
At least 10 departments helped battle the blaze.
The owner had a renovation crew periodically working on the house to repair damages from the first fire, authorities said. But no work had been done since the middle of last week.
“The renovation workers were there last (on) Jan. 15,” Baird said.
Temporary electrical service to the house had been shut off at the panel box, he added, and there were no energized outlets. There were no contents in the home.
Shoop was living at the house with his family when the first fire struck about 11:40 p.m., authorities said. Freeport firefighters made a quick interior attack and they had the blaze contained within five to 10 minutes.
The fire was contained to what was believed to be the front living room. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
Baird said the cause of that fire was undetermined, but acknowledged that he could not rule out careless smoking.
