Santos leads SRU to victory
Luiz Santos had 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team slipped past Mercyhurst 73-71 in overtime Saturday.
It was the third double-double of the season for Santos, who was joined by three other players in scoring in double figures.
Devin Taylor added 14 points, Tabari Perry 11 points and eight rebounds and Jon Valeriano 10 points for The Rock (13-7, 10-6).
The loss ended a six-game winning streak for Mercyhurst (14-6, 12-4), which was led by Luis Leao’s 27 points and 10 rebounds.
SRU never surrendered the lead over the final 22 minutes, including five in overtime, although Mercyhurst did tie up the game four times over the final six minutes of regulation.
Bill Weaver’s two free throws with 30 seconds left tied the game for Mercyhurst at 65. SRU, however, scored the first three points of overtime.
A successful free throw by Taylor and Valeriano in the final 30 seconds proved to be the winning margin.
Mercyhurst 64, SRU (women) 58 — SRU rallied from a 15-point second half deficit against Mercyhurst to tie the game at 55 with 3:36 to play, but the Lakers responded with a 9-3 run to close out the victory.SRU dropped its sixth straight game.“I was pleased with the fight we showed in the second half,” SRU coach Tanya Longo said.Danielle Smith led The Rock (5-15, 2-14) with 16 points and seven rebounds while Jasmine Cooper added 13 points and Sherita Stanley chipped in 12 points and Paris Thomas eight assists.Dana Banda led the Lakers (10-10, 8-8) with 23 points.Mercyhurst jumped out to a 15-0 lead over the first four minutes before SRU trimmed the deficit to five with about five minutes before halftime.The Rock turned the ball over five times before it scored a point and had 25 turnovers on the day.“No question,” said Longo. “If we solved our turnover issue, we would be a pretty good basketball team.”Mercyhurst used a 10-0 run to open up a 45-30 lead with 11:50 to play, but SRU used a 25-10 spurt to pull even late in the half.“They showed a lot of tenacity,” Mercyhurst coach Deanna Richard said. “They kept coming after us.”
CCAC Allegheny 96, Butler County Community College 53 — John Tyler paced the Pioneers with 17 points against the top team in the WPCC. Antawane Davis added 14 points and Alec McDeavitt 10.
Butler County Community College (women) 88, CCAC North 44 — Casey Fleeger scored 25 points for the Pioneers with Emily Wise adding 23 and Karyn Larson 22.Erica Schultheis netted 14 points.Indoor Track and FieldAt the NCAA Division II Team Challenge at the SPIRE Institute Saturday in Geneva, Ohio, Janine Powls captured the mile with an NCAA provisional time of 5:01.As a team, the SRU women placed sixth with a total of 42.6 points. Ashland won the meet with 79.6 points.Among many top-10 performances for the team were Katelyn Wetzel (Butler), who placed eighth in the 60 (8.02) and 10th in the 200 (26.31).In the men’s meet, SRU placed 12th as Camron Daugherty placed third in the pole vault (4.73 meters) while David Caldwell (Butler) placed eighth (4.28).Eric Geddis (Seneca Valley) placed 12th in the 5K (15:41.33) and Hunter Williams (Seneca Valley) was a member of the 1,600 relay team that placed seventh with a time of 3:20.65.
