SRU's Herlihy gets 250th win

BC3 volleyball team defeated in finals of WPCC tournament

The Slippery Rock University women’s soccer team sweated out a 1-0 double overtime win over Mansfield Saturday at Mansfield in a PSAC cross-over game and gave coach Noreen Herlihy a milestone to remember.

Brooke Edwards scored the game-winner in the 109th minute off a cross from Dara Demich, giving Herlihy her 250th win.

She is the 11th coach in Division II history to reach the mark. SRU (11-3-1, 10-3-1) has won three straight.

Cross CountrySlippery Rock University’s men’s and women’s cross country teams finished third and fifth, respectively, at the Lock Haven Go Fast River Run Saturday.Jeremy Parsons led the men by finishing eighth in 25 minutes, 37 seconds.Janine Powis led The Rock women by finishing in 22:48 to place ninth.

Field HockeySRU’s 1-0 overtime win over Indiana (Pa.) Saturday has The Rock matching program bests.SRU has now won five straight, its longest winning streak since 1987. The Rock (9-6, 7-4) also has reached nine wins for the first team since the 1988 squad finished 10-3-1.Michelle Couch scored the lone goal against the Crimson Hawks.

FootballKarns City graduate Tyler Kepple threw a touchdown pass for Grove City College’s only touchdown in a 64-7 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to Thomas More Saturday. The Wolverines (0-7, 0-5) were outscored 41-0 in the first half.

Men’s soccerSRU had its two-game winning streak snapped in a 6-1 loss to No. 11 nationally-ranked Mercyhurst.The Lakers scored four times in the first 27 minutes to sink The Rock (9-6, 5-4).

VolleyballThe Butler County Community College team lost in the finals of the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Champions at BC3 to Potomac State College 25-13, 25-23, 25-11.Alexis Schrecengost (Butler) led the Pioneers with 12 kills, while Michael Bowser (Freeport) added seven kills and Emily Shorr had 22 digs.The second-seeded Pioneers advanced to the finals by beating third-seeded Pennsylvania Highlands 25-10, 25-8, 25-10.Amanda Wensel led BC3 (16-10) with 11 kills, while Bowser added 12 digs and six kills and Danika Durand (Freeport) handed out 26 assists.
