Through local efforts, monthly gifts are being sent to airmen at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska.

As the Eagle reported on Veterans Day, Debbie Macurak sent bags of treats in October. In November, she sent hand warmers and warm winter socks. Macurak's son, Skylar Macurak, 20, is stationed at the base.

For December, Debbie Macurak is finishing up collecting travel mugs to send to the stationed airmen. She said recent donations have put her up to about 350 mugs, and more planned donations should get her close to her goal of about 400 mugs.

In January, Debbie Macurak is planning to collect toiletries such as toothbrushes and deodorant to send.

Anyone wanting to donate to that effort can drop toiletries off at the Berkshire Hathaway office on Route 8 in Butler.

The goal, Macurak said, is to improve morale at the base during the winter months.
