Farming store set for mall

Rural King will take Bon Ton anchor site

CENTER TWP — The near-empty Bon Ton store inside the Clearview Mall soon will be filled with farm equipment.

Rural King, headquartered in Mattoon, Ill., will become one of the mall’s anchor stores after the Bon Ton closes this month.

The Clearview Mall, which is owned by J.J. Gumberg, has more than 60 stores. Bon Ton, Boscov’s, JCPenney, Sears, Dick’s Sporting Goods and T.J. Maxx are the largest stores.

However, the Bon Ton is in the final month of its lease, and is in the process of clearing out the remainder of its inventory.

When it’s gone, the farm supply store will replace it.

“Rural King will take the space previously occupied by Bon Ton,” said Mara Mrvos, a spokesman for J.J. Gumberg, in an e-mail. Mrvos offered no other information on the store.

It is unknown when Rural King will open. Calls to the company and the Clearview Mall management were not returned this week.

Rural King has 76 stores in 10 states, according to its website. Its lone store in Pennsylvania is in Connellsville, south of Pittsburgh. Merchandise it sells includes agricultural and automotive equipment, hardware, lawn and garden supplies and houseware.

The Bon Ton announced in October that it would not renew its lease with the mall for 2015 and will close Jan. 31. It has 38 employees.

The Bon Ton isn’t the only store closing in the mall. The Deb Shop, located next to the Rite Aid Pharmacy, began a going out of business sale on Friday. The Philadelphia-based retailer filed for bankruptcy last month and is closing its stores across the country.
