SR rolls to 31-0 victory
GREENVILLE - It was all Slippery Rock all night long.
Led by a balanced offensive effort, the Slippery Rock High School football team dominated Greenville for a 31-0 victory Friday.
Jesse Kniess had two touchdowns in the win for the Rockets and led the rushing attack with 53 yards on eight carries.
He was one of five running backs to have at least 25 yards rushing as Slippery Rock gained 209 yards on the ground overall, compared to 60 for Greenville.
"I'm surprised we scored that many points," Slippery Rock coach Clyde Conti said. "I didn't expect our offense to be that strong."
After a J.R. Thompson 31-yard reception set the Rockets up at the Greenville 20, Kniess finished the two-play drive with his first touchdown of the game, a 20-yard burst that put Slippery Rock ahead 14-0 with 11 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Rockets started the drive from midfield after David Bauer intercepted Greenville quarterback Cody Emmett's pass at the goal line and returned it 50 yards.
In limited action, Emmett completed only two passes for four yards. Emmett's backup, Josh Chisholm, played a large chunk of the game, completing 3-of-11 passes for 50 yards and two interceptions.
The Trojans (0-5, 0-4) finished the game with five turnovers, including two lost fumbles.
"Right now, we're not good enough at this point to overcome all the mistakes," Greenville coach Bob Stone said. "We're not going to be any better until we fix them."
Stone said mistakes have been a trend all season long for his team.
"That's the same way it's been all year, a huge screw-up at the wrong time," Stone said. "At this time, that makes it very difficult to keep from getting discouraged."
Conti said the Trojans played with a strong effort.
"I feel strongly about their kids," Conti said. "You've got young people who are playing with heart, and I know it can get discouraging."
After a 39-yard Craig Bicehouse field goal put Slippery Rock up 17-0 entering halftime, Kniess struck again in the second half, this time scoring from three yards out to put the Rockets up 24-0 with 7:12 left in the third quarter.
Bauer completed the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run with just over seven minutes to go in regulation, putting the Rockets up 31-0.
The Rockets got on the board first with 8:19 to go in the first quarter when quarterback Ben Collins connected with Thompson on a 37-yard strike to put Slippery Rock up 7-0. Collins finished 4 for 8 for 96 yards and the one touchdown while Thompson finished the night with two receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown.
