Eagles cruise to district final

FRANKLIN — With three weeks off between games, Grove City coach Jeff Bell was concerned about turnovers entering Friday's game against East.

It was the Eagles, however, who took full advantage of the Warriors' mistakes.

Grove City scored three first-quarter touchdowns — two after the Warriors turned the ball over on downs and another following an interception — on just four offensive plays in a 49-0 District 10 Class AAA semifinal victory at Franklin Stadium.

With the victory, Grove City (10-0) will face Cathedral Prep, which routed Meadville in the other semifinal. The game will be played next Friday at a site and time to be determined.

“After the layoff and everything, I was concerned about turnovers. I harped all week not to turn the ball over,” Bell said.

“I thought the layoff would hurt our defense more than our offense. You can't simulate that in practice. We missed some tackles and made a couple of mistakes, but I thought the defense did a great job,” Bell added.

The Warriors totaled just 102 total yards but three possessions indirectly turned into three scores for the Eagles.

The Eagles opened the game with three plays and a punt, then the Warriors picked up a pair of first downs in its first three plays — the latter a 17-yarder by Anthony Jordan.

Grove City regrouped and pushed the Warriors (7-5) back to a fourth-and-30 at its own 35.

A bad snap on the punt attempt lost three yards to give Grove City the ball, Wes Phipps scored from 32 yards out on the first play from scrimmage.

Foster Reznor would intercept Jauwan Ford on the ensuing Warriors' possession.

Grove City scored on the next play — a 58-yard catch and run to Phipps from Tyler Dagres with 3:41 left in the first quarter.

East would attempt another fourth-down play, this time needing eight yards from its own 46, but Ford's pass fell incomplete.

Two plays later, Reznor scored on a 37-yard run on the final play of the quarter for a 21-0 advantage.

“I thought we would struggle in the first quarter,” Bell said. “If we had the lead in the first half, I thought we would be OK.”

Reznor added a 21-yard scoring run, then the Eagles recovered an onside kick and needed just four plays for Harold Price to score from five yards out to take a 35-0 lead with 4:10 left until halftime.

With the mercy rule clock running in the second half, Phipps added an 8-yard scoring run in the third quarter and caught a 51-yarder from Dagres in the fourth quarter that closed out the scoring.

In all, Phipps rushed for 94 yards on six carries and two scores and caught all three of Dagres' completions for 130 yards.

“I was just doing my part,” Phipps said. “All season, we kept saying, ‘Do your part. Make sure things happen.'”

Phipps had appeared to return an interception for a touchdown early in the third quarter, but a block in the back put the ball at the East 23.

“That was all right,” Phipps said. “It's the effort that counts. We shook it off and scored two plays later.”

On a personal note, the win was Bell's 100th at Grove City.

“You don't win 100 games without good kids and good coaches,” Bell said. “We have a great group of kids.”

Said Phipps, “It's hard when the 100th win is overshadowed by the 101st win,” said Phipps in reference to next week's championship game. “If we don't get that, the season will not be as sweet as it could be.”
