Falcons tired of losing

FOXBURG — Enough is enough!

That's the attitude Brad Dittman has taken in regards to the A-C Valley football team's streak of 12 consecutive losing seasons.

He now plans on doing something about it.

Dittman graduated from A-C Valley in 1995 before playing tight end at the University of Virginia in the late 1990s. He became the sixth head football coach at his alma mater since the Falcons last turned in a winning season in 1999, taking over the reins in March.

A-C Valley went 2-7 last year in Chris McNany's third and final season as coach.

“I can't say what's been missing here the last 12 years,” Dittman said. “All I know is what I plan to do from this point on. We're looking to win every game we play. There will be no more looking at two wins as a good season.”

This season marks the first time in 20 years that A-C Valley's football team is not involved in a co-op with Cranberry High School, which now supplies players to Oil City High School. The Falcons currently feature 29 players on their roster.

Dittman was hoping for a few more players, but likes the attitude of the ones who stuck around.

“We started with 32 and a couple quit,” he said, “but with the remaining group, I don't see them going anywhere. They've all been working their butts off this summer.”

“Practices seem to be more intense this year,” said senior center/linebacker Jimmy Holton. “A lot more guys have been lifting weights this summer. Hopefully, it leads to a better season.”

Dittman is in the process of installing a pistol offense, a variation of the shotgun.

“The majority of the time, our quarterback (Kevin Kaufman) will be 3 yards behind the center,” Dittman said. “We'll still get our downhill running game going, but it will also allow us to throw the ball around.”

A 6-foot, 178-pound senior, Kaufman completed 17-of-39 passes last year for 221 yards.

“He's a little inexperienced, but he's smart and one of our leaders,” said Dittman.

The Falcons have a host of players who can carry the football, including seniors Landon Delisio and Josh Suto and juniors Dallas Wingard, Andrew Strauser and Mike Suto.

Talent also can be found at wideout with the likes of Justin Rothen, Ryan Bartley, Brody Irwin and Greg Elliott.

The blocking up front, however, still needs some work.

The team features just one tight end in Anthony Painter while the guard spots are not set in stone just yet. But with Holton at center and Chase Longo and Cole Terwilliger manning left and right tackle, respectively, the Falcons have a solid core to build around.

“Our offensive line is a bit of a concern, but we've been putting a lot of work in,” Dittman said. “We seem to be lacking some technique.”

Holton will also be a leader within the team's 3-4 defensive scheme from his middle linebacker spot. He averaged 10.7 tackles per game in 2011.

Kaufman intercepted seven passes last season as a cornerback.

Rothen is on pace to be the Falcons' place-kicker while Kaufman is working as the punter.

Holton, along with the squad's other 13 seniors, is determined to make the 2012 season one to remember.

“It would be great to leave my mark and have people notice me, notice this program,” he said.
