Pioneer women get region crown

SRU teams still have PSAC hopes

Julia Baxter was named Most Valuable Player of the NJCAA Division 3 Region XX Tournament, leading Butler County Community College’s women’s basketball team to the championship at Anne Arundel (Md.) Community College on Sunday.

Baxter scored 15 points in a 58-45 semifinal win over Westmoreland County Community College. She then dropped 21 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in a 68-65 win over Montgomery-Rockville (Md.) in the title game.

Christina Davis was chosen for the All-Tournament Team after her triple-double in the final: 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

Alycia Brehm added 14 points in the title game and Kalynn Callihan 11 points and 10 rebounds.

BC3 will face West Georgia State at a time, date and site to be determined with a trip to the national Elite 8 on the line.

Both Slippery Rock University basketball teams moved closer to securing a berth into the upcoming PSAC tournament.

The Rock men defeated visiting Gannon 65-57 on Saturday while the women prevailed 62-53.

Senior center Cornelius Brown tallied his fifth straight double-double with a career-high 33 points and 15 rebounds to lead SRU’s men.

The Rock (15-12, 10-11) can lock up a conference tournament bid with a victory Wednesday at Pitt-Johnstown. A loss would end SRU’s season.

SRU’s women’s team received 23 points from Lexi Carpenter and 11 courtesy of Ciara Patterson.

The Rock (13-14, 9-12) needs a win at Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday and a Seton Hill loss to Indiana (Pa.) to make the conference postseason.
