Campbell keys SR's final push

SLIPPERY ROCK — Adele Campbell clutched the District 10 championship trophy and searched for the words to explain what it felt like to finally hold it.

"I don't know," Campbell said after a long pause. "It's indescribable."

For much of the year, Campbell herself has defied description.

The senior is a 5-foot-10 force in the post for the Slippery Rock High girls basketball team who can also shoot from the outside. She's a shot blocker with the agility to step out and guard an opponent on the perimeter.

Yet Campbell has been more enigma than a star this season because the Rockets are loaded with scoring options around her.

She has rarely been asked to carry the offensive load.

Until Saturday.

In Slippery Rock's 59-40 district championship victory over Sharon, Campbell scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter to end any hope of a Tiger rally.

"I just got some open looks and I got some good passes," Campbell said. "The offense just got flooded into me."

Campbell hit a deep 3-pointer with five minutes left in the game that gave the Rockets a double-digit lead. Sharon never got closer after that dagger plunged into the Tigers' heart.

At halftime, with just two points on 0-of-3 shooting, Campell vowed to make her mark in the second half.

Slippery Rock coach Adrienne Orris said Campbell was already making her mark on defense and on offense by setting screens for guards Karly and Kourtney Rhoads.

"At halftime, she looked at me and said, 'Coach, I have to finish. I have to finish,'" Orris said. "I just looked at her and said, 'Just keep screening.' It doesn't matter if you're finishing or not. Someone else is going to step up on this team. They left her wide open at times and she was there and she took the ball right to the hole. Adele had a great second half."

Campbell also haunted Sharon on the defensive end.

With guards Brittany Benedetto and Karlesia Edwards determined to drive to the hoop, Campbell was there waiting for them.

Campbell had five of the Rockets' 11 blocked shots.

For Campbell, the real reward wasn't statistics, but the trophy she held in her hands.

"We did it our freshmen year, but it really wasn't us," Campbell said. "That was another team. This is awesome to come back and get it again. This is what we worked for all year. This was it."
