KC, North battling tough foes

North Catholic and Karns City are our last two high school football teams standing.

One thing is certain — if you're still playing this late into the fall, it's already been a great season. Only eight teams in each of the six classes remain across the state.

But North and Karns City will have time to reflect over the winter. Their current focus is moving on to the state semifinals and both have very tough tasks in front of them.

I am 92-17 this season. Let's break down the matchups!

Karns City vs. Farrell — If you like to watch teams running the football, and running it well, this game is for you.

KC's Diehl Stadium will be the site of an old-school ground battle Friday night.

The Gremlins (11-1), District 9 champions and winners of six straight games by lopsided scores, are averaging 287 rushing yards per game and have scored 52 touchdowns on the ground.

The effort has been spearheaded by a pair of seniors — Luke Garing has 1,031 yards and has scored 25 touchdowns. Jayce Anderson has 1,033 yards and has added 10 scores. The duo has combined for 7.7 yards per rush.

Both players run with attitude and they have written their own chapter in the storied history of KC's proud ground attack.

Quarterback Eric Booher and receiver Micah Rupp have formed a potent downfield connnection, with the latter catching 21 passes for 453 yards and six scores. That's an average of nearly 22 yards per reception and has given opponents something else to defend against.

Garing and Anderson are the team's top two tacklers, but the unit has contributions from many players. Take, for instance, the 64 tackles from sophomore Luke Cramer, or the 42 tackles (nine for loss) by senior Austin Brown.

Unlike KC, the Steelers rely on one player for big games running the ball. Senior Anthony Stallworth has gained 2,023 yards and scored 28 touchdowns this season. That's over 15 yards every time he carries the ball.

Farrell (10-0) has allowed eight or less points in eight games this season.

The Gremlins will score on the Steelers, but not enough.

Score: Farrell 29-16

North Catholic vs. Central Valley — The Trojans (12-0) and Warriors (12-0) will meet at noon Saturday at Heinz Field in a battle of unbeaten teams.

North has surrendered just 92 points all season, the Warriors 76.

It may seem like a very even matchup on paper, but the Trojans are decided underdogs.

Central Valley, winner of the last two WPIAL titles, is also the defending state champion.

The Warriors feature running back Landon Alexander, who leads all of WPIAL Class 3A in rushing yards. Quarterback Antwon Johnson is capable of making the big play as well.

North has no shortage of playmakers with the likes of quarterback Joey Prentice, Liam Straub, Jack Fennell and Kyle Tipinski, among others.

Defensively, Tyler Primrose, Daniel Long, Shamus Straub, Robbie Kress and Co. have given North's opponents little margin for error this season.

I see the Trojans keeping this one close into the second half, but Central Valley will pull away for its third straight district title.

Score: Central Valley 38-17
