SLIPPERY ROCK — Fast starts are becoming the norm for the Slippery Rock High football team.
The Rockets got off to another scintillating start against Warren on homecoming night.
Slippery Rock scored touchdowns on its first four offensive possessions and threw in a kickoff return for a score for good measure to build a 35-14 halftime lead against Warren in a 42-20 win over the Dragons Friday night.
“The thing I'm so proud of these guys for — and I told them this after the game — is we had a great week of practice, probably the best we've had since we've gotten here,” said Slippery Rock coach Brendan Hathaway. “It was crisp. It was focused. I think they are learning if you practice, if you work, the wins will come on Friday night.”
Slippery Rock (6-0, 3-0) also scored 35 points in the first half last week against East. The Rockets have now put up 125 points in the first half in the last five weeks.
It took the Rockets just two offensive plays to score the first points of the game against Warren (5-1, 3-1).
Slippery Rock quarterback Ryan Currie burst up the middle and ran untouched for 29 yards and a score.
Warren, though, responded with a scoring drive of its own, capped when quarterback Austin Jerman found Luke Wortman wide open in the seem for a 30-yard touchdown.
“We answered right back,” said Warren coach Brad Wright. “That was nice to see.”
What wasn't nice to see for the Dragons' coach was what happened next.
Frank Conlon took the kickoff at his own 7 and jetted down the middle of the field for 93 yards and a touchdown for Slippery Rock.
Wright said he didn't have the correct personnel on the field for the kickoff and had no idea why.
“That's inexcusable,” Wright said.
For Slippery Rock, it was a quick way to wrest the momentum back from the Dragons.
The Rockets practiced for such a situation during the week.
“We actually did a cross on that. Our linebackers coach, Ken Raabe, has been wanting to put that in,” Hathaway said. “He thought if Frank could get a seem he could take it all the way. When Frank hits a hole, he hits a hole.”
Slippery Rock scored on its next three possessions in the half — a 5-yard run by Conlon, a 19-yard run by Currie and a 9-yard run by Jake Whitmer.
It's fifth possession of the half came with less than a second on the clock and resulted in a quarterback sneak by Currie.
Slippery Rock took a 42-14 lead on Currie's third touchdown of the game, a 1-yard plunge early in the fourth quarter.
Currie finished with 91 yards on 16 carries. He threw just two passes, but one was a 33-yard completion to Jake Whitmer.
Six Slippery Rock players had at least one rushing attempt.
Joey Meyer led the Rockers with 143 yards on 11 carries, including a 53-yard run that set up Slippery Rock's final score.
“That's what we try to do. Triple-option football ... the ball is going to be spread around,” Hathaway said.
“I have to take my hat off to (wide receivers) Chris Reesman and Dustin Mellott,” Hathaway added. “They're great receivers and on any other team they'd be catching five, six balls a game. But what they do is block for their teammates. Sometimes we talk about lineman, but the receivers in our offense block.”
The Slippery Rock defense was just as good as its offense.
The Rockets were facing another dual threat at quarterback in Jerman, who came into the game as the Dragons' leading passer and rusher.
Slippery Rock held Jerman to a mere 40 yards rushing and sacked him three times.
Jerman was 20-of-32 for 214 yards, but completed only four passes of more than 20 yards.
“Hey, we're young out there in the secondary — two sophomores and a junior,” Hathaway said. “But our front line puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback out there. This was a great game because he is such a good quarterback.”
Notes: Slippery Rock is 6-0 for the first time since 1984. ... Rockets' senior fullback Jeff Croll, who tore multiple knee ligaments two weeks ago, represented the Rockets as a team captain.
