SRU hosting New Haven in Lutz debut
SLIPPERY ROCK — Records could be the order of the day Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Marcus Martin is on the verge of breaking one. So is Shamar Greene. Either way, Shawn Lutz will establish one.
Lutz will be making his Slippery Rock University head football coaching debut when The Rock hosts New Haven at 1 p.m.
“I’m anxious and excited,” Lutz said. “Our entire team is ready to face somebody else. The players are tired of each other. The coaches are tired of each other.
“All I want to do is win the game. By what score or how it happens, I don’t care.”
The Rock is carrying an active NCAA Division II record 17-game home winning streak into the contest. SRU defeated New Haven 39-13 in opening the season on the road last year, The Rock’s first win in four all-time games against the Chargers.
“Did we learn anything when we played them last year? We learned that they’re darn good,” New Haven coach Chris Pincince said. “They play very effectively at a fast pace.
“We stayed in the game with them for a while, but they wore us down. We know we have to play four solid quarters Saturday.”
Rock defensive end Martin needs just one quarterback sack to break SRU’s career sack record of 32 — and he’s only a junior. Greene needs 179 yards to break The Rock’s career rushing record.
“I’d love to see those (records) fall Saturday,” Lutz said.
While Lutz is making his head coaching debut after 19 years as an assistant at SRU, offensive coordinator Justin Roper and defensive coordinator Dom Razzano will debut in their positions as well.
Roper played quarterback for now NFL head coach Chip Kelly at Oregon. Razzano played at The Rock and is in his third year on the staff.
“When your program has success, guys move on,” Lutz said. “(Former offensive coordinator) Zach Patterson has gone to Sam Houston State. Justin knows all about our fast-paced offense. I think we’ll get even quicker.”
The retooled Rock offensive line features four-year starter Joe LoSchiavo at center, Seneca Valley graduates Dean Ketterer (left) and Steve Gaviglia (right) at tackle, Austin Fields and Jim Popa at guard.
While New Haven has a veteran kicker-punter in Danny Stock, who hit seven field goals last year, SRU has freshmen in Jake Chapla at place-kicker and Josiah Davis at punter.
“It’s their first game and you don’t know how they’ll do right out of the gate,” Lutz admitted. “Special teams can decide games. That could be a key.
“We need to win the turnover battle, win special teams, run the football and stop the run. If we do all that, I’ll feel good about things.”
New Haven used two quarterbacks against SRU in last year’s opener, but senior Ajee Patterson is the clear starter this year. He threw for 2,098 yards and 13 TDs a year ago.
Andre Anderson, an 1,100-yard rusher, returns, as do top receivers Ty Headen (41 catches), Henry Adegunle (26), Devin Martin (24) and Rishawn Harris (22).
“On a good day, we’ll have eight to 10 different guys catching passes ... But it has to be a good day,” Pincince said.
Defensively, linebacker Tyler Condit (160 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions) anchors the unit for the Chargers.
“He’s been special for us,” Pincince said.
Don King III, a senior transfer from Sam Houston, nosed out Zack Newsock and will start at quarterback for The Rock.
“I feel like we have two very capable quarterbacks,” Lutz said. “The big thing with Don is his mobility. He can run away from pursuit and the blitz. And he’s got a very live arm.”
While The Rock looks to extend its home winning streak, New Haven figures to play a lot of people.
“Our main objective is to win our conference,” Pincince said. “These first two games, yeah, we want to win, but the big thing will be getting a lot of new faces acclimated to college football.”
New Haven is picked to finish second behind Assumption in the Northeast-10 preseason poll. The Rock is picked to finish second to Indiana in the PSAC West.
