Prexies dominant in rout of Freeport

Washington back torches 'Jackets

FREEPORT — Washington had to endure a three-hour bus ride to Freeport Friday.

That was about the only thing that held the Prexies back.

Shai McKenzie spearheaded a dominant Washington performance with 257 yards on seven carries and four touchdowns in a 60-6 nonconference victory over the Yellowjackets.

The Prexies ran just 14 offensive plays in the first half — seven for first downs with six going for touchdowns.

“I’m really proud of them,” Washington coach Mike Bosnic said of his team. “I thought we’d have a real struggle. The kids had to sit on the bus for three hours (due to traffic from a rush-hour crash).

“I worried all week. (Freeport) is a well-coached team. They’re physical and big, a pretty good ball team,” Bosnic added.

Freeport opened the game with a first down on the first play on a Travis Hall 16-yard run, but punted three plays later.

“We came out and we moved the ball,” said Yellowjackets coach John Gaillot. “I thought that would be difficult.

“This was a nonconference game and I wish it was at the beginning of the year. ... We’re looking at the big picture next week. We have a conference game we need for the playoffs.”

Washington (8-0) needed two plays — runs of 14 and 66 yards by McKenzie — to take the lead, then added the conversion pass from Josh Wise to Jordan Allen.

On Freeport’s next possession, Brendan Lynch was intercepted by Chase Caldwell, who went 54 yards for a touchdown with 6:24 left in the quarter.

Jaylin Kelley pulled in a conversion pass for the 16-0 advantage.

The Yellowjackets were looking to answer when Lynch led a 15-play drive that chewed up 7:48 off the clock, but after driving to the Prexie 17, three successive runs for losses ended the drive.

Washington erupted for the five scores — a 65-yard run by McKenzie, a 2-yarder by Wise, a 66-yard hookup to Darius Spinks from Wise and 10- and 57-yard runs from McKenzie, the latter on the final play — to take a 48-0 lead into halftime.

Spinks opened the second half with an 83-yard kickoff return before the Yellowjackets finally got on the board as backup quarterback Andrew Romanchak engineered a 12-play, 49-yard drive, capped by his own 1-yard run.

At that point, Freeport (6-2) had run 48 offensive plays to Washington’s 14.

Lynch carried 19 times in the first half and Gaillot was not planning on risking any chance of injury. Neither team did, as reserves filled the game throughout the second half.

McKenzie, though, showed why, as just a junior, he’s a major-college football recruit.

“He’s 1,000 times better in person,” Gaillot said. “No wonder why he’s Division I. He’ll have a heck of a career.

“We had him a few times, but he hit right out of them. I wish Washington all the best.”

Notes: Freeport led the time of possession in the first half 19:22 to 4:38. ... Daron Whitaker added a 49-yard run in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring. ... The Yellowjackets will host Summit Academy Friday.
