County to get $3.1M from shale gas funds

HARRISBURG — Butler County's cut of the $243 million in shale gas impact fees to be distributed in Pennsylvania is the seventh highest in the state.

The county will receive $3.1 million in impact fees from 2018, according to a state Public Utility Commission news release.

The county contains the seventh-highest number of unconventional gas wells of the counties where drilling is being performed, the release said.

The county receiving the most funds this year is Washington, at $8.4 million.

The funds are expected to be distributed to counties in the next few weeks.

Washington County contains the most shale gas wells in the state, at 1,747.

Butler County's well count stands at 579, according to the release.

The Marcellus Legacy Fund, which provides financial support for environmental, infrastructure and other projects throughout the state, will receive almost $90 million in 2018 impact fees.

Almost $1.7 billion in the fees have been collected from drillers and distributed by the PUC in the past eight years.
