Freeport's king bee

Freeport quarterback Brendan Lynch runs through the Summit Academy defense for a touchdown during the Yellowjackets' 47-0 win Friday night. Lynch rushed and threw for more than 100 yards and returned a punt for a touchdown.
Yellowjackets' Lynch stings Summit with versatile performance in 47-0 win

FREEPORT — It was Senior Night at Swartz Field for Freeport, and what a celebration it was.

The Yellowjackets scored early and often as they went on to defeat Summit Academy, 47-0.

“I'm very proud of how they conducted themselves,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said. “That's the most important thing to me.”

When the pregame ceremonies cleared, the Yellowjackets were poised and ready to go.

“There were a lot of emotions before the game, but we had to wash those away and focus on the task at hand,” senior Brendan Lynch said.

They delivered the first sting to the Knights when they stalled their opening drive of the game with a quick three-and-out. If that wasn't enough, they came right back and scored three plays later on a 29-yard touchdown run by Mike Teorsky.

After another Summit Academy drive quickly ended in a punt, the Knights didn't have enough time to blink before Lynch took the punt 55 yards for a touchdown, putting the Yellowjackets up 13-0 after a missed extra point.

On Summit Academy's ensuing possession, things seemed to start to come together. With great starting field position on its own 41, it took one play, a 14-yard run by Douglas Brooks, before the Knights were on Freeport's side of the field.

After a third-down completion set the Knights up with another first down inside the 35, a costly penalty stifled the drive, and they were faced with a fourth-and-long. They chose the early gamble and an incompletion turned the ball over to Freeport.

“We didn't come to play,” Summit Academy coach Stephen Sherer said. “We were flat, that's all I can say.”

With the Yellowjackets already leading 13-0, Lynch made it 19-0 in one play with a 57-yard gallop to the end zone,

Lynch, inching in on 1,000 yards for the season coming into the game, said that it really wasn't something that crossed his mind.

“I wasn't really sure how much more I had,” Lynch said. “I just wanted to come out and run as hard as I could.”

He did reach the milestone, but was quick to direct the credit elsewhere.

“I want to give all the credit to my line and the lead blockers because without them I wouldn't be doing anything that I am doing,” he said.

Lynch was causing havoc for the Knights the entire game. He scored on a special teams play, a passing play and he also added three rushing touchdowns. He accounted for three of the next four touchdowns. The Knights didn't have an answer for Lynch or the Freeport defense.

Despite the Knights having several drives that set them up with an opportunity to make something happen, they had more negative plays than positive.

It wasn't until late in the first half that they got the big play that could potentially get their offense moving.

On first down from their own 22-yard line, quarterback Christopher Harp connected with Eugene Key, who made a spectacular grab near the sideline for a 28-yard gain. With the half winding down, the Yellowjacket defense swarmed Harp for a 12-yard sack, forcing the Knights to punt. The first half ended with the score 47-0.

Lynch finished the game with 123 yards on six carries and three touchdowns. He also threw for 107 yards on two completions as well as the punt return.

“There are a lot of things we could build on, we made a lot of mistakes too,” Gaillot said.

With the win the Yellowjackets are co-champions with Burrell, but hold the head-to-head tiebreaker and will be awarded a higher seed going into next week's playoffs.
